Eleven more families have joined the Giving Pledge created by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates, committing to donate at least half their wealth to charity, the pledge organization announced this week.
The new additions bring the total number of pledges to 92 families. Among the new commitments are Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, Progressive Insurance Companies Chairman Peter Lewis, and Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.
Warren Buffett will be donating his wealth to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, but signatories are allowed to donate their wealth as they see fit. Pledges vary from medical relief to boosting "Canadianism" to lobbying for more effective medical marijuana policies, reports Bloomberg.
Each donor writes a letter that is posted on the Giving Pledge's website explaining their reasons for donating and what they hope their contribution might accomplish. Perhaps FlightSafety International founder Albert Ueltschi put it best when he wrote," I have never seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul trailer. You can't take it with you." In 2010, Ueltschi founded HelpMeSee, which is dedicated to helping the 20 million people worldwide who suffer from treatable blindness.
