SuftCast, an IT firm based in Maine, has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft (MSFT 0.66%) alleging patent infringement, according to a brief statement posted on its website. In the statement, SurfCast CEO Ovid Santoro alleges that the company developed the concept of "tiles," a key element of Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system, in the 1990s.
The lawsuit was filed at the federal district court of Maine. The Associated Press reports that Microsoft says it's "confident it can prove the claims are without merit."
Windows 8, which was released for general availability last week, is the latest iteration of Mircrosoft's iconic operating system.
