On Monday, the Department of Defense announced that it has awarded privately held government contractor iGov Technologies a $500 million single award, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for "acquisition, design, integration, production, and delivery" work on the Army's Tactical Local Area Network, or TACLAN, family of systems. iGov will be performing this contract, and developing the TACLAN systems, in support of U.S. Special Operations Command.
According to iGov, TACLAN aims to enable "net-centric warfare, interconnecting deployed elements of the DoD Tactical Forces through our mobile IT infrastructure and applications." So in essence, it is a system for improving battlefield communications.
Combining hardened laptop computers, "intelligence laptops," routers, and related equipment, the system will improve command and control between Special Ops commanders and troops in the field, while also supporting "situational awareness, mission planning, and execution."
