There are outages, and then there are outages. Recently, Microsoft (MSFT 0.46%) suffered the latter when software intended to update key servers in one of the company's data centers instead overheated the system. Safeguards shut down the troubled area, leaving some users without online email service for the better part of 16 hours.

Should investors worry? A little, says Tim Beyers of Motley Fool Rule Breakers and Motley Fool Supernova, if only because the length of the disruption is unlike anything we've seen from cloud veterans Amazon.com (AMZN 1.49%) and Google (GOOGL 1.42%), each of which has suffered issues of its own in recent months.
