Following Google's (GOOGL 0.55%) announcements last month that it will bring its gigabit Fiber service to Austin, Texas, and Provo, Utah, the search giant has announced it will make Shawnee, Kan., the fourth city to get the service. Kansas City was the first.
Located outside Kansas City, the Shawnee City Council voted unanimously Thursday to work with Google Fiber.
Google said it is impressed by Shawnee's "vision to keep their citizens informed and involved using the Internet." Mayor Jeff Meyers said, "the ultra-high speed Google fiber network will enhance the quality of life for people in Shawnee by providing faster access to essential digital resources. ... This will grow and strengthen Shawnee's competitive advantage in the years to come."
No date has been set for when Google Fiber will be available in Shawnee. The city said Google is building the Fiber network by demand and that "fiberhoods" of 250 to 1,500 households that meet a pre-registration goal will get Fiber service.
