Just one week before Shield's official release, NVIDIA surprised nearly everyone by dropping the price $50. Here's why.

With mere days to go until NVIDIA (NVDA -3.33%) Shield's official release, NVIDIA decided to cave to gamers' requests by lowering its price by $50 to $299.

But while it's tempting to view this as a desperate reaction by the company to weak pre-order sales for the device, investors might be missing the bigger picture regarding Shield's intended purpose -- namely, to serve as an introduction for consumers to NVIDIA's long-term vision for platform-free, console-independent gaming, says Fool contributor Steve Symington in the following interview with the Fool's Erin Miller.
