Is This Stock a Fad?

A look at a few companies that may not have been built to last the test of time, and what investors need to focus on when they are searching for the next big thing.

In the following video, Fool contributor Matt Thalman discusses a few stocks that we, as investors, often hear analysts and other market participants discuss, and talk about as just a fad that one day will fade away into obscurity. But, more importantly, Matt points out a few things that investors should think about when purchasing not only the stocks he mentions, but also, any company that operates in a new industry, or is attempting to create an innovative product.

Matt first became interested in the stock market while attending West Virginia University. A finance professor told a story about how a few thousand dollars invested in Mylan Pharmaceutical's stock in the 1970's had turned a number of employees, some even working as janitors at the company, into millionaires after holding onto their shares for more than 30 years. The seed of investing in quality stocks and holding those positions for a very long time was planted.
