The invitations are out. It's now official that Microsoft (MSFT 0.37%) will be unveiling the much-rumored update to its Surface line of tablets on September 23.

This is welcome news as we now know with complete certainty just how much of a flop the original Surfaces have been in the market. The question now shifts to how Microsoft plans to improve the device and hopefully reinvigorate its waning appeal with consumers and businesses. The only problem is that, if the early production leaks are at all accurate, Microsoft will be doing anything but that with its next tablet. In fact, quite the opposite: It's starting to look like it has another dud in the making.
