We've collected the most popular companies amongst Fool.com readers and put them head-to-head in a good old-fashioned challenge we're calling The Motley Fool Better Buy Tournament.

In today's first round match-up of The Motley Fool Better-Buy Tournament, Freeport-McMoRan squares off against Google in a battle to determine which stock is the better buy now. The 64-company tournament pits two Motley Fool analysts against each as they make the case for their stocks with the winner determined by you, the readers.

In the video below, Motley Fool energy analyst Taylor Muckerman thinks Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX 0.58%) should advance to the next round because of its foray into oil and gas. 2014 will be the first full year with these acquired assets on its books. Couple this growth story with stable reserve valuations for copper and gold, and Freeport-McMoRan is ripe for long term investors.

Motley Fool tech and telecom analyst Andrew Tonner makes the case for tech giant Google (GOOGL -0.15%) to advance to the next round because, simply states, it's one of the most dominant, forward thinking companies in all of technology. Its core search business dominates virtually every market in which it operates globally, minting investors billions of dollars in profits year in, year out. And thankfully due to the immense success of its Android mobile operating systems, Google's search dominance should continue for years to come. Beyond that, Google has the size, ambition, and deep technical expertise to continue to solve "big picture" problems, all of which bode well for its investors in the years and decades ahead.
