You may not know it, but your household appliances consume huge amounts of electricity even when they're off. Cable boxes are among the worst culprits: with 225 million in the United States, they use as much energy annually as four nuclear reactors produce. This is a huge waste of energy -- and a huge opportunity for greater efficiency.

Thankfully, it appears things might be changing after companies like Comcast (CMCSA -0.37%) and DIRECTV came together late last year and agreed to tackle the problem head on. Their proposal could save $1.5 billion of more each year for residential electricity buyers.
