The 2016 box office has seen some surprising hits and misses, but the year's most successful picture is a shocker.

Halfway into 2016, the year's box-office competition has seen some exciting twists and turns, and the results could have long-term significance for companies including Disney (DIS -0.15%), Time Warner (TWX), Twenty-First Century Fox (FOX) (FOXA), and Comcast (CMCSA -2.00%). One company dominates the list of 2016's top-performing films, but a surprising film has emerged as the top earner over the last six months.
