The next five years will decide whether XRP (XRP +0.56%) is the place where financial institutions actually keep their stablecoins, move value, and park assets, or whether one of its competitors is a better option.
The question is less about slogans and more about who builds the high-bandwidth and high-quality money-moving rails that holders of large amounts of capital are comfortable using. So let's take a beat and map out what this asset's medium-term future is going to look like.

The bull case looks pretty good here
To appreciate where XRP might go during the next five years if the bulls are right about it, it's necessary to understand the concept of asset tokenization.
In a nutshell, tokenization means recording the ownership and other metadata of an asset as a token on a blockchain. Tokenizing assets can improve transaction settlement, chain of ownership transparency, and programmability via smart contracts, among other features. Think of it as moving a spreadsheet of who owns what onto software that is auditable and runs 24/7.
For institutions and asset issuers, tokenization features and regulatory compliance controls matter as much as raw speed. The XRP Ledger (XRPL) offers compliance controls at the protocol level rather than requiring users to implement third-party solutions. As a result, tokenized asset issuers can require authorization for who may hold their tokens, and they can freeze or claw back issued tokens under certain conditions, which helps address regulated use cases. The point here is that financial institutions moving their assets onto the blockchain with tokenization are going to be better served by the XRPL than another option.

But why is tokenization so crucial to the bull thesis for XRP?
Consider that Boston Consulting Group's research estimates that the tokenization of illiquid assets could be a $16 trillion opportunity by 2030, up from a tiny base today. Only $22 billion of tokenized assets already live on-chain, a figure that has been rising; only $321 million of that sum uses XRPL's rails at the moment. If even a low-single-digit percentage of that future market sits on XRPL, utility demand and usage fees will be much higher than today.
Every action taken on the ledger requires a tiny fee paid in XRP, which is then burned. That creates a structural link between usage and long-term token demand. If institutions settle, rebalance, and move value on XRPL at scale as a consequence of parking their tokenized assets there, more XRP will be needed, and the price will likely rise.
Assuming that XRP keeps implementing institution-grade features, expands its stablecoin base, and continues to win regulatory footholds in key jurisdictions as a result of its streamlined tokenized asset platform, the odds favor a much higher token value in five years, because the chain would sit in the middle of real financial workflows that require XRP to function.
The bear case and the base case
XRP's future might not be as sunny as the bull case suggest if it can't one-up the competition it faces in the tokenization market. And those competitors are currently very far ahead.
Ethereum still hosts the biggest tokenization ecosystem today, with $8.3 billion in tokenized assets on its chain. Solana's low gas (user) fees and growing institutional adoption suggest it will keep winning market share as well, especially in segments that favor fast transaction settlement times or frequent transactions. Neither of those competitors have native compliance tooling, so both rely on third-party solutions that may be technically burdensome to implement.
XRP must thus prove that its built-in compliance translates into sticky institutional liquidity that does not leave at the first sign of trouble.
In the bear case, those native compliance features aren't a big enough draw for asset issuers. That's a plausible outcome because right now, the XRPL's on-chain liquidity and stablecoin supply are tiny in comparison to Ethereum's and (to a lesser extent) Solana's. If financial institutions can't transact to the extent that they want to on XRPL, it won't matter that they need to implement some additional compliance tooling to use another chain because there wouldn't really be any other option for them.
Nonetheless, a total wipeout in the face of pressure from Ethereum and Solana is unlikely. The base case for 2030 is thus that XRP will be one of eight or nine credible settlement layers that institutions use for managing their tokenized assets and stablecoin balances as well as their cross-border payments and transfers.
So here's how to invest accordingly.
First, treat XRP as an asset to hold through market cycles rather than a bet on the next headline. Start small, add on evidence, and hold through downturns. The three key metrics to watch during the next couple of years are growth in tokenized value on the XRPL, growth in stablecoin float, and the number of active institutional corridors and regulatory permissions for operation.
If those continue to increase, the five-year path looks very favorable.
