Over the past year, shares of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD +6.50%) have surged roughly 180%. Despite a 17% drawdown in the last two months, this outpaces the gains posted by its large rival Nvidia (NVDA -0.06%), whose stock advanced only 23% during the same period.
This performance gap translates into an AMD share price above $480. But even so, I think a stock split remains unlikely in the near term. Let's dig into why.

What are stock splits, and how do they work?
A stock split is a simple form of financial engineering. During a split, a company increases its outstanding shares in a fixed ratio, while proportionally reducing the price of each share. The takeaway here is that stock splits do not change a company's overall market capitalization.
Companies pursue splits primarily to lower the entry price to a range that feels more approachable to retail investors. The intention is to broaden the shareholder base and increase trading liquidity. Psychological factors play a role here because a lower nominal share price can make a stock appear less expensive even though the underlying market value of the business remains identical.

How does a stock split impact AMD?
For AMD, a stock split would mainly represent a cosmetic price reduction to improve the optics of its soaring share price. At best, the split might modestly expand retail ownership by making larger purchases less capital-intensive.
Against this backdrop, a stock split accomplishes little beyond a temporary boost in AMD's visibility -- perhaps fueling a short-lived uptick in trading volume driven by renewed interest. Ultimately, the company would not gain anything in terms of fundamental strength: Revenue growth, profit margins, competitive positioning, and cash generation would be unaffected.
In this context, I get why AMD hasn't executed a stock split in the last 26 years.
What smart investors are looking at instead
Smart investors monitoring AMD are focusing less on the possibility of a split and more on the company's product transitions and notable customer wins in the artificial intelligence (AI) data center landscape. Currently, AMD is shifting its chip architecture from the Instinct MI350 and MI355X generations to its new MI400 series.
These chip platforms have already converted into multigigawatt commitments from AI hyperscalers. Meta Platforms has locked in a multiyear deal covering up to 6 GW of Instinct graphics processing units (GPUs), with initial Helios deployments scheduled for the second half of 2026. Meanwhile, OpenAI holds a similar agreement that should begin to ramp later this year and accelerate through 2027.
Anthropic has also committed up to 2 GW of MI450-series capacity inside AMD's Helios systems, with the first gigawatt expected to arrive in the first half of 2027. Lastly, Microsoft is integrating Helios racks into Azure services, while Oracle is building a supercluster of 50,000 MI450-series GPUs on its cloud infrastructure.

Key Data Points
To me, measurable progress that demonstrates these deployments move from press announcements to concrete production utilization will be the clearest signal that AMD is converting its architectural innovation into durable data center market share against Nvidia.
Should the company continue to report robust growth in its data center segment, I suspect shares could re-rate higher, making an AMD stock split more likely down the road.
