Chrysler is recalling more than 919,000 vehicles to fix a problem that can cause an air bag to deploy when it is not needed.
The recall affects 745,000 vehicles in the U.S. Affected vehicles are the 2002-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty. An investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started a year ago found 215 incidents of inadvertent air bag deployment that resulted in 81 minor injuries, according to Chrysler.
The NHTSA determined that "a component in the air bag control module may fail causing the front airbags, side curtain airbags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated."
The recall fix involves installing a supplemental jumper harness to the air bag control module.
