North Carolina-based BB&T Bank (NYSE:BBT) has emerged over the last few years as one of the strongest banks in the country. Not only did it survive the financial crisis, but it's gone on to grow considerably in the aftermath, increasing its balance sheet by nearly 40% between the end of 2007 and today.
