With the release of Facebook's new meta app, Apple faces a threat from an unexpected challenger.

While one of Apple's (AAPL 4.08%) best-known advantages is its simplicity of use, a recent announcement by Facebook (FB 1.83%) may represent the most significant challenges Cupertino has ever seen. In CEO Mark Zuckerberg's words, the development allows users to make their smartphones a highly personal experience. "We love Apple," Zuckerberg said, but that is not impeding his company's efforts to shake up the industry.

In the following video, Fool.com contributor Doug Ehrman discusses the development and the potential it represents for both Apple and Facebook.
