Believe it or not, Microsoft (MSFT 1.84%) hasn't been the most disciplined company on the acquisition front. Quite the opposite.
The company has consistently tried, and failed in some way, shape, or form, to buy a ticket into a market it's deemed important. It torched billions of shareholder dollars by spending BIG on the purchases of Yammer, Skype, and aQuantitative, to name a few. And, as Microsoft observers are no doubt aware, mobile is the market du jour that the software giant needs to target. The company did just that by backing up the proverbial dump truck once more to buy hardware partner Nokia's (NOK 3.85%) handset business.
