A few months ago, Northrop Grumman (NOC -0.02%) delivered its 500th AN/AAQ-37 Distributed Aperture System (DAS) sensor to Lockheed Martin (LMT -0.20%) for integration into the F-35 Lightning II aircraft.

The DAS imagery is projected inside a helmet developed by Rockwell Collins (COL) and Elbit Systems (ESLT -0.06%), and enables the pilot to "see" through the floors and wings of the aircraft, both day and night. The system also allows missile detection and tracking, launch point detection, and several other cool things.

Our roving reporter Rex Moore was able to try out the helmet at the recent Air & Space Conference near Washington, D.C., and in this video he chats with Rockwell Collins' Marty Gunther about the technology.
