The Apple (AAPL -0.35%) rumor mill would have investors believe that Apple is preparing to launch its 12.9-inch iPad as early as next April, sporting a high-resolution 2K display. Shortly thereafter (these same rumors suggest), Apple will supposedly launch another model with an even higher 4K resolution display. Apple has likely prototyped various models of a larger tablet, but the specifics here are quite dubious.

Instead, it would make more sense for Apple to launch one single 4K model in the fall, which would be in line with its current product-cycle timing. Apple is seemingly getting behind 4K in general, as the upcoming Mac Pro will support 4K monitors as well. Meanwhile, third-party content providers are also starting to offer content in 4K. All the pieces are lining up, which is the opposite of what happened with the trend toward 3-D in recent years.
