What are stock market holidays?
Ordinarily, the two major U.S. stock exchanges, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq, are open for their main trading sessions starting at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 4:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. However, there are exceptions. Stock market holidays are weekdays when the markets are closed.
When is the stock market closed in 2026?
In addition to most federal holidays, the NYSE and Nasdaq are closed on Good Friday. Additionally, while many federal offices are closed for Columbus Day and Veterans Day, the NYSE and the Nasdaq are open for trading. Over-the-counter markets follow the same schedule.

Early market closures in 2026
In addition to times when markets are closed for the entire day, there are some occasions when markets hold abbreviated trading sessions. These shortened trading sessions occur on days that surround other holidays. The NYSE and the Nasdaq close at 1 p.m. ET on the day after Thanksgiving and the day before Christmas.

Bond market closures in 2026
Ordinarily, the U.S. bond market is open for regular trading on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. ET until 4:00 p.m. ET. Following a similar schedule to the NYSE and the Nasdaq, the U.S. bond market is closed during all stock market holidays. In addition, the bond market is closed on Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 12) and on Veterans Day (Monday, Nov. 11).
Like the NYSE and the Nasdaq, there are several days when the bond market closes earlier than its usual time.
