It's also expanding to higher-margin businesses like its e-commerce marketplace, made up of third-party sellers, and digital advertising on its website. With the company clearly evolving, Walmart could be a much different business in five or 10 years.

With its reputation for low prices, Walmart is also well-prepared to endure a recession or an economic downturn, giving it an advantage over many of its peers.
