The 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show is under way in Las Vegas. Even though some may downplay the event because big names like Apple (AAPL -1.22%) and Microsoft (MSFT -1.27%) don't have official representation, their presence permeates -- and even dominates -- the floor space. This is because thousands of app and accessory makers owe their very existence to these two companies' products.

Meanwhile, names like Ford (F 0.66%) -- not normally associated with consumer electronics -- have the largest presence at the show, as apps and safety technology move more and more into the automobile.
