Boeing Wins Defense Contracts for Satellite Radios, Apache Helo Parts

The Department of Defense announced 13 new defense contracts Wednesday, worth $1.14 billion in aggregate. Boeing (BA -2.87%) won two of them:

• A new $19.3 million firm-fixed-price contract to pay for the labor, material, and other resources necessary to acquire 2,040 AN/PRQ-7A CSEL handheld radios, and accessories for the U.S. Air Force. This smaller contract will run through Jan. 29, 2015. Boeing describes the CSEL handheld radio as a system of secure communications that allows a soldier to communicate his position, and also to send text messages through the CSEL UHFSATCOM satellite radio network.
• A $59.6 million contract modification exercising a third option-year three on a preexisting performance-based logistics contract to acquire "unique components" needed to build AH-64D Apache attack helicopters for the U.S. Army. This option-year extension will continue the original contract through Oct. 31, 2014.
