House of Cards may have been the show that put Netflix (NFLX -3.92%) on the Emmy map, but it could be CBS(PARA -0.47%) Showtime hit Dexter that really delivers subscriber growth for the streaming video company.

In the video below, Fool contributor Demitrios Kalogeropoulos argues that Netflix has a long history of booking subscriber gains from serialized dramas like Dexter. Long-running popular series such as Lost and Breaking Bad account for a large proportion of viewing hours over time, as they satisfy current fans but also build a base of new viewers who can start from the first episode and watch right through to the series finale. Having Dexter in its stable should lift subscriber numbers toward Netflix's target quarterly growth figure of 2 million, Demitrios says.
