In the video above, Fool.com analyst Eric Bleeker explains why he thinks Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) is a great way to ride the smartphone boom.

Bleeker says it’s hard to predict whether Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) or the consortium of companies using Google’s (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android will dominate the future of smartphones, but one thing you can be sure of is that no matter which handset provider wins, Qualcomm will profit. The company has very valuable patents behind every modern data -- or 3G -- network in the world that allow it to collect a set percentage, typically 4%-5%, of every phone sold that can connect to these data networks. Simply put, Qualcomm wins under just about any scenario in a data-connected future, and it's priced very attractively.

As far as the future’s concerned, the large American firms are already moving on to next-generation 4G data networks. This has some investors skittish about Qualcomm’s future prospects. However, there’s huge 3G rollouts just starting in China, India, Latin America, and other developing markets that Qualcomm should benefit immensely from. Also, Qualcomm has strong patents in that next generation of data networks, and even once they’re rolled out, we’ll still see 3G complementing it for a long time. Throw in a strong semiconductor unit and boatloads of cash, and Bleeker believes Qualcomm is well-positioned for the future.
