Sociedad Química y Minera (SQM) expects a tight balance between demand and supply in 2026 and is positive on long-term demand trends, as it expects lithium demand to outpace supply over the long term. Consequently, has been investing in increasing its production capacity. With recent improvements now complete, the company claims it will be able to increase its market share in supplying lithium carbonate for use in EV batteries, laptops, tablets, and other electronic goods.

SQM's expansion projects encompass adding capacity in its core Chile operations, as well as in China and Australia, in line with its global production business model aimed at becoming a truly global supplier of lithium. Its relatively low-cost production in Chile and its joint venture with state-owned Codelco ensure it will be a leading player in lithium for decades to come.

2. Albemarle

Mining and chemical producer Albemarle (ALB +2.35%) is leading the charge in global lithium output. Among the company's biggest customers is Panasonic (OTC:PCRFY), which manufactures lithium batteries for everything from small consumer electronics to EVs. Lithium prices are volatile and will ultimately guide Albemarle's sales. However, the company has proven over the years to be a durable mining operation capable of bringing lithium to market.

Management responded to deteriorating market conditions between 2023 and 2025 by cutting capital expenditures and other costs to strengthen its balance sheet while waiting for an upturn in the lithium market. In addition, management divested non-core assets in the refining catalyst and catalyst services business to raise cash for future investment.

The good news is that market conditions improved in 2026, and Albemarle is benefiting from a better pricing environment. Its management continues to believe long-term end demand will be driven by stationary storage and EV adoption. As such, Albemarle continues to invest in early-stage development projects to ensure it can meet future demand volume growth.

Albemarle also has upside potential if Western lithium prices diverge from Chinese lithium prices amid increasing protectionism and tariff actions in the global economy.

According to Wall Street analysts, Lithium Americas is set to start generating significant revenue in 2028. The company's value lies in its joint venture with General Motors (GM +0.20%) to fund, develop, construct, and operate a commercial mine and chemical manufacturing facility at Thacker Pass, Nevada. Lithium Americas owns a 62% interest in Thacker Pass, with GM owning the remaining 38%.

The company anticipates completing phase 1 of the project in late 2027 and producing 40,000 metric tons per year of battery-grade lithium in 2028. Management notes that Thacker Pass is the only new industrial-scale lithium project under construction in the U.S.

SQM also refines lithium, but it's mainly reliant on its core raw material extraction in Chile.

Should you invest in lithium stocks?

While the future of lithium demand remains tied to EV battery demand, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are increasingly important drivers of demand.

It's an attractive market, currently moving from oversupply to what many analysts predict will be a deficit in 2026. As such, the near-term outlook is excellent, but investors need to keep an eye on the state of the Chinese EV market if weaker EV sales in the U.S. encourage automakers to discontinue EV models.

Analysts are forecasting a much more balanced demand-and-supply environment in the coming years, but history suggests that marginal changes in either demand or supply can easily disrupt equilibrium.
